Current base fee categories
| City-assigned scope | Per linear foot | Minimum base fee |
|---|---|---|
Install, repair or replace seawall | $4.50 | $189 |
Shoring, riprap or reinforcement | $0.97 | $71 |
Minor repairs and maintenance | $0.69 | $93 |
The minimum applies to the base permit charge. Ask Building Services which category applies to the full work; a small project is not automatically a “minor repair.”
Worked examples, with the minimum applied first
- 80-foot seawall: 80 × $4.50 = $360; review at 38% = $136.80; subtotal $496.80.
- 100-foot seawall: $450 base + $171 review = $621 subtotal.
- 80-foot minor-repair example: 80 × $0.69 = $55.20, so the $93 minimum applies; review $35.34; subtotal $128.34.
- 80-foot riprap example: $77.60 base + $29.49 review after cent rounding = $107.09 subtotal.
These illustrate the published base and plan-review arithmetic. They exclude other fees and are not an official invoice or a quote for construction.
What the subtotal leaves out
The schedule separately lists state surcharges and a $49 pre-permit inspection fee. Additional permits, inspections or project conditions can change the assessment. The electronic-conversion charge is waived when all documents are supplied and submitted digitally through the portal.
The plan-review charge is nonrefundable and is not credited to another fee. Confirm payment timing and any additional charges with the city before budgeting a final total.
Why the application and schedule disagree
The currently linked Form 31 prints $4.00 per foot with a $169 minimum for seawalls and a $50 pre-permit inspection. The signed 2026 resolution lists the newer figures above. Preserve the resolution with your estimate and ask the permit desk to resolve any invoice question.
Contact City Building Services at 239-389-5059 or permitdesk@cityofmarcoisland.com. The office—not this website—determines the project charge.

How should you check the fee on a real project?
Confirm the office and work category
Give the city the property address, proposed scope and measured length. Ask whether the work is assessed as seawall installation/repair/replacement, reinforcement or minor maintenance. Do not choose a category only because its rate is lower.
Apply the category’s minimum
Multiply the accepted length by the published rate, then compare that result with the minimum base fee. Use the larger amount before calculating the published plan-review charge.
Reconcile the assessed invoice
Ask the reviewer to identify the base, review fee, pre-permit inspection, surcharges and any related applications separately. Keep the invoice and the applicable schedule together so later revisions can be checked.

Agency charges
The published examples cover selected city permit arithmetic. They do not establish DEP or federal charges, separate dock permits, additional inspections or the final amount the city will assess.
Professional and construction work
Surveying, engineering, environmental assistance, demolition, materials and installation are separate services. Ask whether the contractor includes permit administration and whether agency payments are passed through at cost or handled another way.
If a revised scope adds work, ask the office whether it changes the category, assessed length or related permits. Keep the revised plans and invoice together. For a Goodland, Isles of Capri or Port of the Islands parcel, start with the county jurisdiction check before using any city figure.
